How to use the official question PDFs
- Find the date your Form N-400 was filed. Before 20 October 2025 you study the 2008 list of 100 questions; on or after that date you study the 2025 list of 128 questions.
- Open the matching PDF from the table below. The links go to uscis.gov, so you always get the official file and not a copy.
- Check the revision shown in the table (M-1778, 09/25 for the 2025 list; rev. 08/21 for the 2008 list) against the one printed on your download.
- If you qualify for 65/20, open the 2008 65/20 PDF for the 2008 test, or look for the asterisked questions in the 128-question PDF for the 2025 test.
- Mark the questions whose answer depends on where you live or on an office-holder, and check the USCIS Test Updates page for them shortly before your interview.
- When you want to be tested rather than just read, practise from the PDF with the quiz and list pages linked below, saying each answer out loud.
Reading and writing vocabulary are separate PDFs, listed in the same table, and each is a one-page list of words rather than questions. Print the files if you prefer paper: the wording is the USCIS wording, and USCIS can revise a file, which is why the table shows the revision and the date we checked it.
Where can I find the official citizenship test questions?
USCIS publishes the full question-and-answer lists for both test versions as PDFs on uscis.gov. The 2025 list has 128 questions and the 2008 list has 100. This page links to the English files directly, so check the revision date and page count in the table before you study. USCIS also links Spanish and other-language versions of the 2008 list and the 2025 study guide (One Nation, One People) from its Study for the Test page. For 65/20, use the asterisks in the 128 PDF: the Test Updates page marks the 2025 questions differently (it stars Q23 and Q38), so learn Q23 as well.

What are the citizenship test questions for 2026?
In 2026 two question sets are in use: the 100-question 2008 set and the 128-question 2025 set. The date your N-400 was filed decides which one applies, not the date of your interview. A filing before 20 October 2025 uses the 2008 test, and a filing on or after that date uses the 2025 test.
| Item | 2008 test | 2025 test |
|---|---|---|
| Filing date | Before 20 October 2025 | On or after 20 October 2025 |
| Questions in the list | 100 | 128 |
| Questions asked | Up to 10 | Up to 20 |
| Correct answers to pass | 6 | 12 |
| Officer stops at | 6 correct or 5 incorrect | 12 correct or 9 incorrect |
Both versions use a 60 percent pass mark.
Which answers can change before your interview?
Only answers that depend on the current office-holder or on your own state or home can change. The question bank itself stays the same, but answers about officials can differ over time. Name whoever holds the office when you are interviewed.
- Scan your list for questions that name an office, such as senator, representative, governor, Speaker, President, Vice President or Chief Justice, or that ask about your own state or home.
- Check the current holder on the USCIS Test Updates page. Our copy was last reviewed 09/18/2025, so check it again before you rely on it.
- Note the answer for your own state, such as your senator, representative, governor or state capital.
- Confirm each answer again shortly before your interview.
More questions about this topic
Do I need to give every answer listed under a question?
No. Where a question lists several answers you give as many as the question asks for, so “Name two” needs two. USCIS encourages applicants to use the listed answers, and the Policy Manual also accepts an alternative phrasing of a correct answer.
What happens if I fail part of the naturalization test?
You get two attempts at the English and civics tests. If you fail a portion at the first interview, you are retested on only that portion between 60 and 90 days after the first interview. Failing the same portion a second time means the officer must deny the application (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 12 Part E).
How many questions do I need to study for the citizenship test?
Study the full list for your version, because the officer can ask any question on it. On the 2008 test you study 100 questions and need 6 correct from up to 10 asked. On the 2025 test you study 128 questions and need 12 correct from up to 20 asked.
How this tool works and where the numbers come from

Check yourself: common questions
Is there a separate 2026 USCIS civics test?
No separate 2026 test appears in the official lists. The 128-question version is the 2025 test, and it covers N-400s filed on or after 20 October 2025.
Which 20 questions do 65/20 applicants study?
The 20 questions marked with an asterisk on the list for your version: 20 of the 128 questions on the 2025 list and 20 of the 100 on the 2008 list. The officer asks 10 of them and 6 correct answers pass. See 65/20 civics questions for both lists in full.
What if an answer changes before my interview?
Name whoever holds the office when you are interviewed. Check the office-holder questions on the USCIS Test Updates page shortly before the interview.
What are the 100 questions on the citizenship test?
The 100 questions are the 2008 civics list, which applies to N-400s filed before 20 October 2025. You can read the full list on our 100 civics questions page or open the official USCIS PDF, revision 08/21.
How can I take the citizenship test in my language?
Only some applicants may take the civics test in another language: those who qualify for the 50/20 or 55/15 English exemptions, for 65/20, or who have an approved N-648 medical exception from English, may take it in their own language and must bring an interpreter fluent in both English and that language (USCIS, Exceptions and Accommodations, reviewed 01/09/2026). Everyone else takes it in English. Our practice questions are in English only. See Citizenship test in Spanish for the checker.
What happens during the civics test, and what if you fail?
You get two attempts at the English and civics tests. If you fail a portion at the first interview, you are retested on only that portion between 60 and 90 days after the first interview. Failing the same portion a second time means the officer must deny the application (USCIS Policy Manual, Vol. 12 Part E).
What do I need to study for the U.S. citizenship test?
Study the list that matches the date your N-400 was filed: the 100-question 2008 list for filings before 20 October 2025, or the 128-question 2025 list for filings on or after that date. Also prepare for the English reading, writing and speaking parts. See the citizenship test study guide for an order to follow.
