Citizenship Test Audio
The civics test is oral, so practise by ear: hear the question, answer aloud, check the answer.

How to use the listen mode
- Choose the list above the deck: 2025 (128 questions) or 2008 (100 questions), matching your N-400 filing date.
- Press Start. The deck opens in listen mode, so each question is read aloud with your browser’s voice. Use the speaker button to hear it again.
- Answer out loud before you look at the card.
- Flip the card to see the full USCIS answer list and the question number.
- Mark the card as known or not yet. Cards you miss move to an earlier Leitner box and return sooner; cards you know return later.
- Continue to the next card. At the end of a session you see how many you knew.
Box positions are stored only in this browser, so the deck remembers what you know on this device and nowhere else. Voices and speed come from your device and differ between browsers. Where an answer depends on where you live or who holds an office, the card shows a note pointing to the USCIS Test Updates page instead of a name.
A good routine is one short session a day. Cards in the lowest box come back in the next session, cards in higher boxes come back after longer gaps, so a few minutes daily beats one long sitting. Say each answer out loud before you flip, because the real test is oral. The scheduling is ours; USCIS publishes the questions and answers only.
Which civics test applies to me?
The version you take depends on the date your N-400 was filed, not the date of your interview. Filed before 20 October 2025 means the 2008 civics test with 100 questions. Filed on or after 20 October 2025 means the 2025 test with 128 questions. Both versions are oral and both use a 60 percent pass mark.
| Date N-400 was filed | Civics test | Questions on the list | Officer asks up to | Correct answers needed | Officer stops at |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Before 20 October 2025 | 2008 test | 100 | 10 | 6 | 6 correct or 5 incorrect |
| On or after 20 October 2025 | 2025 test | 128 | 20 | 12 | 12 correct or 9 incorrect |
How do I practise for an oral test?
Practise by saying each answer out loud before you check it, since the civics test is oral and the officer asks the question aloud. Work from the list for your own test version, one category at a time. Use the audio to hear each question, answer it, then compare with the listed answer.
- Confirm which list applies to you using the filing date above.
- Listen to a question, then answer aloud without reading the answer first.
- Check your answer against the listed answers. An alternative phrasing of a correct answer counts, so you do not need the exact wording.
- When a question asks for several items, give as many as it asks for. “Name two” needs two.
- Note the questions whose answers change or depend on where you live. On the 2025 list the office-holder questions are Q23, Q29, Q30, Q38, Q39, Q57 and Q61; on the 2008 list they are Q20, Q23, Q28, Q29, Q39, Q40, Q43, Q46 and Q47. Check the USCIS Test Updates page for their current answers. The state capital questions (2025 Q62, 2008 Q44) depend on where you live: answer with your state’s capital.
- Keep practising until you can answer each question without long pauses.
Why practise by ear?
The officer reads each question aloud and you answer aloud, so understanding a spoken question is part of the test. For the English speaking assessment, the USCIS Policy Manual says: “The officer should repeat and rephrase questions during the naturalization examination until the officer is satisfied that the alien either fully understands the question or is unable to understand English.” You may therefore ask for a question to be repeated. Practising with a synthetic voice is not the same as hearing an officer, but it trains you to answer without reading.
How this tool works and where the numbers come from
Questions and answers are taken from the USCIS PDFs retrieved 2026-10-26 and shown unchanged; counts by category are computed from them; the pass and stop rules are quoted from USCIS Study for the Test and the Policy Manual.

Can I listen to the civics questions?
Yes. This page reads each civics question aloud with your browser’s built-in text-to-speech, then shows the answer. You can also play a whole category in order.
What are the 20 questions on the citizenship test?
There is no fixed set of 20. On the 2025 test the officer asks up to 20 questions from a list of 128, and on the 2008 test up to 10 from a list of 100. The full 2025 list is on the 128 civics questions page, so you can see every question the officer might ask.
Does the audio match the real test?
The format matches, because the civics test is oral and you answer out loud. The voice is your device’s text-to-speech voice, not an officer’s, so expect it to sound different.
Do I need to download anything to use the audio?
No. No audio files are downloaded, and the voice and speed depend on your device and browser.
Is the citizenship test audio available in other languages?
USCIS publishes MP3 audio of the 100 civics questions (2008 list) in English and Spanish. We found no official audio for the 2025 list (checked 2026-10-26). Our listen mode uses your browser’s English voice. Taking the test itself in another language is allowed only for the 50/20, 55/15 and 65/20 groups or with an approved N-648, with an interpreter you bring; see Citizenship test in Spanish.
