The Australian National Symbols Quiz is a browser-based quiz that tests you on Australia’s official national symbols: the national flag, the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, the golden wattle, the national colours, the opal and the national anthem. You answer multiple-choice questions one at a time, and each answer comes with a short Why note explaining the correct choice. The quiz draws on a bank of 34 symbol questions, so you can run short rounds or longer ones. The questions are adapted from Our Common Bond, Commonwealth of Australia, CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/); these are not the official test questions.
Each round is drawn only from the symbols section, so you can repeat it until the answers are automatic.
How to use the Australian National Symbols Quiz
- Open the ‘Questions’ menu and choose 5, 10, 20, 30 or 50 questions.
- Click the Start button.
- Read the question and choose one of the four options.
- Read the ‘Correct answer’ line and the short ‘Why’ note that follows it.
- Click Next to move on, and repeat until the round ends.
- Read your final ‘Score: x of y’ line.
- Click the button to practise the questions you missed, or click ‘Run again’ to start a fresh round.
Start with 5 questions to check the basics, then move up to 20 or 50 once the symbols feel familiar. The practise-missed button is the quickest way to focus on the items you got wrong, because each one has its own Why note to read. The quiz does not show booklet page numbers on screen, so the Why note is where you find the reason behind each answer.
Short runs are easier to repeat, so start with 5 or 10 questions and increase the number once your score stays high. After a run, open the missed questions straight away while the explanation is fresh. Your progress panel shows how many questions you have seen, how many were right or wrong and how many are waiting for review, and it stays in this browser only.
What are the three elements on the Australian flag?
The Australian National Flag is blue, white and red, and it carries three elements: the Union Jack in the top left corner, the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star under the Union Jack, and the Southern Cross. The Union Jack stands for Australia’s British settlement history and the laws and institutions that came with it.
The Commonwealth Star has seven points. Six stand for the six states, and the seventh stands for the territories. The Southern Cross is a group of stars visible in the southern sky.
Two further flags are officially recognised and may be flown: the Aboriginal Flag (black, red and yellow) and the Torres Strait Islander Flag (green, blue, black and white). Keep the three sets of colours apart when you study.
